You can't go wrong with any Chicago Latrobe drills anyway, but sometimes you need a longer length than jobber, which is why it's worth having a few of these style 912 (12" long) drills available. You can use them full length, or in a pinch you can cut one down to any length you need. Plus you will then have some left-over high precision hardened rod available for other projects. Or for example, suppose you need a punch for an odd-sized roll pin. You cut a little off the end of one of these and you'll still have a useful drill left over. I'm starting to buy a variety of 12 inch drills for "just-in-case" projects like that.
