I’ve been making miniature furniture (1:6 scale/Barbie size) for a couple of years. It was my Covid hobby. I made do with a mini table saw, some sanding sponges and lots and lots of wood glue. This month, I decided to get serious and make a doll closet. Well, the fittings for one, since I already have the cabinets. My lumber for this project were 16mm (1/2”) square dowels and 5mm (3/16”) round dowels for the hanger rails. Basically, I needed to drill holes into the square dowels for the round dowels to go into … without splitting the square dowels. Bored yet? I started out using my regular drill and very thin drill bits, moving up to bigger bits (I think I used 4 different sizes). Considering that I needed to drill around 80 of these holes, this just wasn’t going to work.Since I already have a mini table saw and a mini cut-off saw, I thought I would look for a mini drill press. And I wanted it immediately because my project kept getting put off as I realized I needed more or different things for it. I found this one, and was worried that it didn’t have any reviews. Considering that I don’t have any experience with these, it was a daunting decision.I got the drill press this morning. I set it up, freaked out a bit, had lunch, and then got started. It’s not yet dinner time, and I’ve done all of my holes … using one 6mm drill bit for it all. The fact that this drill press can use larger bits is one of the reasons I liked it over others that did have reviews. The drill worked perfectly. I was actually impressed. I like that it is simple to set up, the speed/power settings are on the power block, and it was pretty self-explanatory to use. It came with a bunch of allen keys and a chuck. And that was it.I was a bit confused at first because it cannot adjust up/down. Using a small press allows you to use smaller/shorter drill bits. With larger/longer ones, like the one I used, I had to use small clamps to clamp my square dowels to the bed of the drill press. I’m sure there is another way to do this, but this worked for me. Be sure to use this on your workbench or on a surface you don’t care about damaging. While my drill bit never went that far down, it doesn’t hurt to protect a nicer work surface. While I don’t have any other projects in which to use this, I know that having it will make my creativity flow in the future.
